Smart Mobs - The Next Social Revolution by Howard Rheingold

Smart Mobs Cover The year was 2001. I had recently finished putting together the first iteration of my wearable computer and was actively participating in the wear-hard mailing list.

A fellow list member, Andrew Plumb, contacted me to join Brainstorms: an on-line community founded by technology author and famous geek, Howard Rheingold. I joined and became very active within the group.

Shortly thereafter, Howard contacted me about a book he was writing. He wanted to interview me as a wearable computer enthusiast. It turned out that we were both scheduled to be in New York a few weeks from then, so we set a date.

The scene was recent post-9/11 at the Roosevelt Hotel in Manhattan. Musharoff, the President of Pakastan was staying at the same hotel as I was for the U.N. talks. The place swarmed with secret service . . . well, with permission from Howard, here's his take:

. . . It didn't take long to find out that cyberspace is full of Web sites and mailing lists devoted to wearable computers. That's how I came to meet a cyborg in the lobby of New York's Roosevelt Hotel. The president of Pakistan was staying at the same hotel that night, so the place was full of Secret Service agents, but Melanie McGee was sitting at a table in black leather and much more: head-mounted display over one eye, wearable computer in a shoulder holster, electrical cables wrapped in black electrical tape linking them, and battery pack on her belt. She composed email with one hand, held a drink in the other. Young men standing around the hotel lobby glanced at her and then talked into their sleeves. She's a programmer and independent software developer when she's not plugging components into her wearable computer. Even though only one of us wore a wearable computer as we walked around Manhattan, I found that the conversation could be augmented by easy access to Google. (Imagine conversations in the days before you could look up the answer to any question.) Melanie is an example of the first wave of enthusiasts, those technically savvy enough to roll their own. . .

Web-Based Network Management: Beyond the Browser by Curt Harler

Beyond the Browser CoverIn 1998, Curt Harler interviewed me about web-based network management stratagies for his book, Web-Based Network Management, aimed at I.T. managers. I discussed the advantages of web-based management to my company at that time, ImageNation, Inc. I also explained different management options, including browser basics, client-side, server-side, and distributed web programming, to Curt and his readers.See pages 196-199.
